Islamic marriage advice and family advice

I’m converting to Islam – do I have to change my name?

Islamic names

I am a Hindu girl born and raised in india. I have been exposed to different cultures. I am also very familiar with Islam and have chosen to marry my best friend - a Muslim.

I have accepted to convert to Islam and my question is - Do I have to change my name if I convert? My name is "KARISHMA" means "miracle" and I believe if your name is does not go against Islam you do not need to change it?

  1. "miracle" what a beautiful name mashaaAllah 🙂 you should keep it

You do not need to change it, as its a beautiful permissible name and it doesn't have a meaning going against the teachings of islam

Congratulations sister, may Allah shower you and your future husband with mercy, love and happiness.

  2. If you want to convert into Muslim, name change is NOT required

But, it is very strongly needed to show that you are a Muslim. Any non-Muslim sign is against Islam. For example, After become a Muslim, if you wear a ring of "cross sign" (Christan) on your finger, then people will think you are a Christan. This is prohibited and it can even kick you out of Islam.

Similarly, if anybody hear your name "Karisma", he will think you are Hindu. That is why it is better to change your name so that you don't have any non-Muslim sign in your name. If you still don't want to change your name then just add a Muslim part with it , Such as Karisma khan, Karisma Islam, Karisma Banu, Karisma Akther etc.

  3. I know a girl called Karishma.. And she is a Muslim who comes from a Muslim family. Born and raised Muslim who has that name.

Surely if you have Islam in your heart then that's all that matters. That is just my personal opinion.

  4. I agree. You don't have to change your name. It's beautiful. As long as it has a good meaning,no need for complications in your life.

  5. Dearest Sister,

Masha Allah, Karishma is a beautiful name. I was born and raised in India too 🙂 You need not change your name. God knows the depth of your faith, so it is not necessary to advertise it through a name.

May peace be with you sister.

  6. its Beautiful..... 🙂
