Rejected by Muslim School Because of Dad

A Muslim kindergarten in Minnesota USA

A Muslim kindergarten in Minnesota USA

Question:

My daughter was not accepted in Islamic school (Kindergarten) because her dad is a non-Muslim.

Even though her father is not Muslim, he is willing to give her a muslim education.

Is the school's action supported by the Islamic religion?

Leyla's Answer:

Salaam Dear Sister,

I am sorry for this experience that you are going through.

I can find no basis in our religion to reject a child a Muslim education on any grounds whatsoever. Quite the contrary, it is our duty to bring Islam to everyone who wants to learn about it.

I have taught at two different Muslim schools, and at both schools the philosophy was always to attract all children from all backgrounds, religions and cultures. One of the schools I taught at prided itself on it's inter-faith child population and the other school actively targeted parents of non-Muslim backgrounds to try and enrol them into the school.

We are required by our religion to teach Islam, through education or Islam and we do not discriminate against the one who seeks knowledge - we reward it and nourish it.

If anyone reading this knows something different, please share - but as far as I am concerned our religion does not support the rejecting of an Islamic education to anybody, under any circumstances.

Peace,

  1. The bigger question is Why is the mother married to a non-Muslim ?

    • Muslim, that's your assumption. She never said she was married to him. There are many possible explanations. Maybe she converted to Islam after she had the child with him. Maybe she committed a sin and has since repented. It's not really the issue at hand.
