As-salamu alaykum sister. There is no benefit to consummating the marriage immediately, nor is there any harm. It's entirely up to the couple. If they both feel ready and eager, they can consummate the marriage right away. If they are not ready, or if the woman needs time, they can approach it gradually. By gradually I mean they can take time becoming intimate in small ways. Kissing, hugging, caressing, etc. This could take a few days or even a few weeks. There is no harm in that. Some women are shy or scared, so the husband should be patient and let the intimacy grow between him and his wife until she is ready.
The key is communication. After nikah they can talk about it and let their feelings be known. They should both strive to be understanding of the other and to meet each other's needs.
