Will Allah accept my dua to study psychology?

PsychologyAssalamualaikum, am 18 years old and inshallah i hope to go to university to study psychology.

I always pray to Allah and ask dua for this. I have never lost faith in Allah. Last year while doing my AS level, I had really wanted to study medicine, but unfortunately I had got low marks in one subject area.

I had still not lost faith then because Allah has shown me another career path. But now I am unsure of even getting into Uni to study psychology. I am really in a depressed mood and I feel like there is nothing good in store for me.

  1. Walaykum Assalam Bilal,

Please don't feel depressed, And certainly don't feel as though nothing good is in store for you,
As whatever happens only happens for the best, no matter how wrong it may seem at the time.

Why don't you try performing istikhara, it's a dua You pray to Allah (swt) for guidance in life, for important tasks.
Basically your asking Allah (swt) to guide you the right way, and what ever your dua is (in your case getting into uni for psychology) if that is best for you, then Allah (swt) will make it easier for you, And if it's not for the best, then He (swt) will take you away from it.

Here is a link on how to perform Istikhara,

Please read and understand It carefully, before you perform Istikhara, it will help you interpret it better InshAllah.

  2. Dear Bilal,
    asalamalaikum,

my dear brother , i can tellyou for sure that what you are feeling in temporary. this feeling that there is nothing good in store for you will pass away. dont let it depress you so muchthat you cant think and see forward.Allah is with you. these temporary failures will only make you explore more options.
i must admit i was the same at your age. it was only do or die for me in studies!

now to come to the point what you want to do in life. if medicine is what you want to do for sure, than if you didnt get it in first go doesnt mean you cant get it later. i believe you are in UK or US. the beauty of these countries is that you can start your career by first going in reverse gear.so you can first do a degree (i believe you are interested in science subjects) like anatomy or physiology or biology or may be physics and then reapply for medicine. people who have medicine as there second degree , i find are much more mature and focused doctors. i know many like them personally . some have done degrees in maths, physics, biology, anatomy , physiology etc.

i know a lady doing medicine , she is 36yr old married and a very succesful researcher( usually most people will think by this time that they had what was destined for them but this one didnt), she wanted to do medicine so then decided to go for it, and now she is is working as a doctor. i know another consultant who was a estate agent ,marries with 2 kids and by this time most time people will not dare to change their career but this one did.he is a very good doctor now working as consultant.

there are many stories like these . so the take home message is, the success comes to those who dare to think they can. intelligence is a gift from God but perseverence and hard work gets you there.now iam no way trying to say that you should become a doctor or you should become a psychologist, all iam saying is that you are too young and its too soon to give up hope. the options only run out when you stop exploring.

so my dear brother, dont loose hope. you have been on this earth only for 18 years, you have your whole life ahead to explore you potential. have faith in Allah and keep working hard ,you will reach where its best for you.

all the best. keep praying it will keep you focused.

  3. Allah gives obstacles to show us the right way. In islam we cannot have a feeling of despair instead we trust Allah he who created us and he who is in control of our lives. If medicine isnt what is destined then try another option that also enables you to help people. Try out different skills that would benefit the muslim community such as counselling..perhaps pschology can lead you there. What ever you decide remember its in your qadr inshaallah and it will be for the best only Allah knows the unseen. Have faith in allah and all will be ok. inshaallah.
