Islamic marriage advice and family advice

The woman asked for his name and his mothers name. Is this sihr?

"An astrologer told me the relationship would fail within a year."

Assallam Aalakum all

I have a question/concern.

I've come across a muslimah sister, she is an older woman, approx. 85 years old.
She has a cousin, whos daughter is getting to know a man, and her mother was concerned if this relationship would work.

She came in contact with the 85 year old woman, who is a daughter of a sheikh. To ask her opinion.

The old woman asked "What is his name, and his mothers name?" She told her, and then the mother mentioned something about her checking on a masbaha beads. The younger girl explained that this old woman can see if the relationship can work out based on the male and females name + their mothers name, then check if their signs match (Water- fire, air, earth)

Is that Sihr? I've heard a lot of woman who do this in the homeland

Thanks all.

  2. I fear for this old sister, try and tell her to repent for her action's they were truly wrong and tell everyone you no that going to a kahin, soothsayer, fortune teller is ruin for you.

  3. This women is probably a fortune teller. Nobody knows the future except for Allah. She should rather read istikaarah and ask for guidance from Allah

  4. Hanna, I think you are confusing the words "sihr" and "shirk". "Sihr" means magic or sorcery. "Shirk" means associating partners with Allah, worshiping something other than Allah, polytheism, idolatry, etc.

The process that you are asking about is not sihr - it's not magic - but it is shirk. It is an un-Islamic and haram practice. It is based in Hindu numerology and astrology, and has been picked up by many Muslims of the subcontinent. Some Muslims call it Istikhara, though it has nothing to to do with the real Istikhara that was taught to us by the Prophet Muhammad (sws).

It is forbidden in Islam to consult a fortune-teller, horoscopes, astrology, or anything of the sort.

Muslim has narrated, on the authority of one of the wives of the Prophet (Hafsah - may Allah be pleased with her), that Allah's Prophet said:

"Whoever went to a fortune-teller and asked him about some matter (i.e. of the unseen) and believed him, will have his prayer rejected for forty days."

Also, it is reported on the authority of Abu Hurairah (ra) that the Prophet said:

"Whoever went to a fortune-teller and believed in what he said, has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad."

So we must not engage in these practices and we should try to educate other Muslims about the proper Islamic way.

No one knows the future except Allah. If we want to influence the future, then all we can do is pray to Allah and ask Him for guidance and a good result.
