Is it permissible to terminate a pregnancy that threatens her life?

There can be tremendous morbidity after three or four or five prior cesarean deliveries. Repeat C-sections pose more risk than a first section for many reasons.

Asalam Alakaam

I am married with three kids the younger one is 8 months old now. We always used protection before to go to my wife, but now because of some misfortune my wife is one week delayed for her monthly period.

Our all kids were born with operation, and now she can not afford another operation and my kids need more attention of her as well.

My question is: would it possible for her to terminate this preganancy because of her physical condition?

It could be disaster for her. Please.

I don’t think you should terminate this pregnancy this has happened for a reason. Allah creates a life for a reason I strongly feel it is wrong to abort a child without a strong reason. I am sorry do you realise how lucky you are. There are people who are married and still haven’t got kids and would do anything to even have one I think its wrong just wrong sorry

    • I don't think this is fair. What if the mother, and child dies during the pregnancy? Then the child will die anyway. Then the rest of the children would grow up motherless.

  2. Please see this article on Zawaj.com:

When is it permitted to have an abortion?

    Quoting from the article:

Some Fuqaha and contemporary scholars have given a dispensation to abort the pregnancy (even after 120 days), in the situation where the life of the mother is in certain and absolute danger. This is based on the Juristic principle stated in the books of Usul al-Fiqh:

“If one is overtaken by two evils, one should choose the lesser of the two” (al-Ashbah wa al-Naza’ir, P.98)

They state that the mother’s life should be saved and the foetus aborted, as the mother is established in life, with duties and responsibilities, whereas the unborn child is still in the mother’s womb. But it should be remembered that the mother’s life must be in certain danger, and that this should be advised by a qualified and experienced Muslim doctor.

So if your reason is because of finances or because you feel the other kids will not get enough attention, then no it's not allowed to abort the fetus. But if having another child presents a serious risk to the mother's life, then yes you can do it. And keep in mind that Allah knows your heart.

  3. Not allowed to abort due to financial reasons, as it is forbidden by Allah:

"Slay not your children, fearing a fall to poverty, We shall provide for them
and for you. Lo! the slaying of them is great sin." 17.31

However permissible due to medical complexity and endangering the life of the mother. Expert medical advice should confirm whether the pregnancy poses a risk and not a personal unqualified advice.

  4. I heard once on an islamic channel (Madani channel) that if you pregnancy endangers your life you can abort your child but in the first 4 months. If you passed this 4 month timester then they said it was gunah to abort your child even if your life is in danger.

I have 4 children all born by c-section and im doing fine and they are too. You should seek answers from your doctor on your wife health to see if her body can handle another c-section before considering abortion because every woman is different and they only follow precautions by limiting women to 3. However saying that my 4th section was the best one so Allah only knows. If they had told me that I would die having a fourth section I would have considered abortion but since I heal so well and having minamal scarring I go for a 5th if I was brave enuf. The only thing I would say is that the gaps between the pregnancies are a major factor. They need 2 years to heal but 3 is better or more. My youngest is 4 in july and im still not ready for number 5. My advice is speak to a consultant and make dua.
