Marriage Sunnah or Fard?

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

This has been troubling me since many days. Is marriage obligatory in Islam? I think I don't want to get married. I also feel like I might end up being bad wife and I don't want to change myself. Many duties of the wife, I don't want to follow. I know marriage is highly recommended but will I be sinning if I remain unmarried? I tried to find answers but there are different opinions.

"A group of three men came to the houses of the wives of the Prophet asking how the Prophet worshiped (Allah), and when they were informed about that, they considered their worship insufficient and said, ‘Where are we from the Prophet as his past and future sins have been forgiven.’ Then one of them said, ‘I will offer Prayer throughout the night forever.’ Another said, ‘I will fast throughout the year and will not break my fast.’ The third said, ‘I will keep away from women and will not marry forever.’ Allah's Messenger came to them and said, “Are you the same people who said such-and-such? By Allah, I am more submissive to Allah and more afraid of Him than you; yet I fast and break my fast, I do sleep and I also marry women. So he who does not follow my tradition in religion, is not from me (not one of my followers).”

In this prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had said if we don't follow his sunnah then we are not among his followers. Is it applicable  only to this hadith or to all the sunnah? There are so many sunnah and we should try to follow all but if we don't follow few is it allowed?

Please provide ayah or authentic hadith.

JazakaAllahu khair.

  1. Salam,

It comes down to how much good you can do. If you can maintain a marriage and do well then you should. If you can't maintain a marriage and would be horrible at it then it would probably be better if you didn't get married. Let's say you have a huge anger problem and you like beating up your spouse. In that case I would say not getting married is better for you. Or let's say you like to just sit around the house and play or sleep and you'd like to get married so that you can do nothing all day. Then it's probably not as good of an idea to get married. On the other hand, if you would like to earn the rewards of raising a family, doing work and come from an attitude of what you can do then sure, you should probably get married.
