Playing the Lottery

Gambling ruins lives.

Gambling ruins lives.

Salam brothers and sisters,

I am in a bit of dilemma. I am aware that playing the lottery is forbidden, however I want to help those in need very badly and being in the position I am right now I cannot unfortunately. I want to play the lottery and if I do win I plan to use it 100% as zakat. I was just wondering would it still be haram to play the lottery if my intentions are pure?

Thank you.

  1. yes it would be haram and a waste of money , your chances of winning will not be in your favor. Go volounteer at a mosque thats a good way to help they run various food and clothing drives, or get a job and earn the money in a halal way

  2. It is haram. Therefore any money that you donated from you winnings would also be haram, as the Islamic principle is that anything built on wrong is also wrong.

Make dua' to Allah to give you the ability to help others in a halal way. What Allah has with Him is far more than any lottery. He can give you anything He chooses, if your intentions are good and if it is good for you in your dunya and aakhirah.

  3. Dear Sister,

    Salaam,

You can make 100 reasons to make it look like you are doing some good. But what is haram is haram no matter the reason.

It's like you want to feed the hungry and you are feeding them pork. You are doing good by feeding them but eating and feeding pork is haram, so you cannot feed them pork.

There are many other ways you can help the people in this world apart from donating money.

If you are really interested to donate money in charity, then work hard to earn a halal income and Inshallah Allah will put barakah in your income and you will get to spend more and more.

" O you who believe, spend out of what We have given you before the day comes in which there is no bargaining, nor friendship, nor intercession. And the disbelievers — they are the wrongdoers. "

    Ch. 2:254

Allah says in the Quran to spend from what you have. There is no pressure to earn a lot through haram means in order to spend in the path of Allah.

May Allah grant you lots of Halal wealth to spend in charity.
